# How to answer what is your employment status?

First work out which status the form means. In Jersey it is usually either your working pattern (full-time, part-time, zero-hours) or your residential status under the Control of Housing and Work law. State the exact category and add your contracted hours if you know them.

The question sounds simple until you are filling in a Jersey application form and realise it could mean two quite different things. Statistics Jersey, which gathers the island's labour market data, treats employment status as a matter of contracted hours: full-time covers staff contracted to work more than 25 hours per week, part-time covers staff contracted to work 25 hours per week or fewer, and zero-hours covers staff who have no contracted hours at all. If a form is asking about your working pattern, those are the categories to pick from.

But many Jersey employers and recruiters also ask about residential status, because the Control of Housing and Work (Jersey) Law 2012 affects who they can employ and whether they need a business licence or permission to hire you. Those categories are separate from your hours: entitled, entitled to work, licensed, and registered. Before answering, read the surrounding form fields. If it asks for a registration card number or mentions housing, it is the residential status question. If it sits next to questions about hours or shift patterns, it is the working-pattern question.

## What to say for each meaning

- Working pattern: name the category and the hours. For example, full-time, contracted for 30 hours per week, or zero-hours with no guaranteed hours.
- Residential status: use the exact wording on your registration card. If your card says registered, note that this status was renamed Standard in September 2026, and existing cards did not need replacing, so either term may appear on forms.
- Between jobs: unemployed, previously working part-time, is honest and sufficient. You do not need to explain gaps unless asked.
- Multiple jobs: mention each role briefly, since your status in one job does not automatically describe the others.

## A concrete comparison

Consider two applicants replying to the same care-home advert. One writes employed, which tells the employer almost nothing: it does not show whether she is available for a 40-hour contract or a 12-hour one, nor whether the home can hire her under its licence. The other writes part-time, contracted 20 hours per week, Standard (registered) residential status, British or Irish citizen so no work permit required. The second answer lets the recruiter match her to the rota and check licensing in one pass. On the current Jersey listings tracked on vacancies.je, adverts are grouped by job types such as full time, part time, permanent, temporary, contract and internship, so phrasing your status in those terms makes it easy to place you against a specific advert.

## Things you cannot assume

Some details change and should be verified rather than guessed. The residential status rules were amended in September 2026: Permanent Entitled status now follows 25 years of continuous residence rather than 30, the Registered status was renamed Standard, and a new Licensed for Lease Only status exists. If you are unsure of your own status, the registration card issued for work and housing is the document that settles it, and the residential and employment status pages on gov.je set out what each category means. Non-British or Irish citizens also need a work permit applied for by the prospective employer, so citizenship belongs in your answer too if it affects hiring.

A practical next step: before you next fill in an application, dig out your registration card, note the exact status printed on it, and write one line combining that with your contracted hours and citizenship. Reuse that line whenever the employment status question appears.
